Rejuvenating Mangrove Habitats

Mangroves, typically found in saline coastal areas and tidal zones, are vital for maintaining shoreline stability and safeguarding communities during severe weather events. Our dedicated team plants each mangrove individually, utilizing devices to record essential verification data such as timestamps, geographic coordinates, and visual media.

Empowering Coastal Communities

By focusing on secure areas in Mbuguni, Kenya, our initiative uplifts economically disadvantaged coastal populations, fosters poverty alleviation, and revitalizes the ecologically diverse mangrove ecosystem. The project also generates new income sources for locals by offering fishing opportunities and sustainable mangrove forest yields.

The Importance of Mangrove Forests

  • Mangroves' Role in Ecosystems:

    • Intertidal habitats vital for biodiversity and ecosystem health.
    • Provide nursery grounds for marine species like prawns, crabs, and snapper.

  • Challenges in Kenya:

    • South-east Kenya’s mangrove forests depleted due to over-harvesting for charcoal, construction materials, and income.
    • Ecosystem degradation led to declining fish populations and reduced income for fishing communities.
    • Example: A fisherman who used to catch 10kg of fish daily now struggles to catch 1kg.

  • Global Mangrove Loss:

    • Mangrove cover declined nearly 6% globally from 2000 to 2014.
    • Loss impacts biodiversity, CO2 sequestration, and local livelihoods.

  • Restoration Efforts:

    • Community-led reforestation supported by EarthLungs Reforestation and veritree.
    • Goal: Restore estuaries in 5–6 years to revive fishing grounds and support community income.
    • CO2 sequestration estimate: 0.31 tonnes per tree over its lifetime.

  • Verification Process:

    • Planting verification timelines: 6–8 months for planting, plus 3–4 months for verification.
    • Partners ensure accuracy and avoid rushing the verification process.

- Made with 60 O.Z BCI Cotton Canvas. With a water-resistant exterior, this particular hrade of cotton is one of the most resilient and durable, being able to withstand substantial wear and damage for years on end!

Care Instructions

Do not put in the wash or dryer as it may damage the hardware, alter the shape of the bag and the proportions of the pockets.

Hand washing and air-drying is the best way to clean it! Since the inside is made from water-resistant polyester, you can just rinse it out with water and/or spot-treat the interior and exterior with soap and water.
